You must have read tons of people telling you how they got ripped off – but this article is from the “other side”.

Yep, this article comes from the us as developers. This is no mantra that would give you a sure shot way to be successful but is mainly things we guys come across every single day from clients all over the world. It would be a lie if we or any other company would say that we have 100% client satisfaction rate. It’s not possible in IT or in any other field.

We certainly have had our experience and numerous case studies on what went wrong in some projects, and why some projects got completed with the best possible quality and in the shortest period of time when others failed the transition from an idea to a website.

So based on all of that info, I write this article today and hope that it might help you understand how this business works.

UNDERSTANDING THE REQUIREMENTS:
In this section we are assuming that your knowledge of web development and how internet works is crude. This is an important aspect of what you require in your project and maybe pinning it down. Please note that we know that it’s just not possible for you to be 100% sure of what you require and idea’s would come running during all stages of the project. All right, so what do we learn from the above examples. There is nothing complicated written – but the message comes across in regards to your requirements. A professional developer would be able to understand your requirements better and would get back to you with the best solution available in design and/or coding.

This is far more important in bigger development projects in which the client might need an entire social networking platform – or a tailored application where development would go on for months.

Everyone makes mistakes If you don’t mind that and are willing to work with the individual then quality at the end of it should come out ok. However in coding jobs, Quality comes from processes. What is being coded, how it’s being coded, who is coding, who is testing it. Clearly, where mid to large scale projects are concerned a team is what would work best for you.

Risk: Most of the horror stories we hear from clients is that they took a decision to work with freelancers. In some we hear that there was NO communication with the freelancer after initial payment was made – and the guy simply vanished. In others work was never completed. To reduce your risk your preference should be established companies.

MAKING SURE THE DEVELOPER UNDERSTANDS YOU AND VICEVERSA

Making a developer understand your requirements is extremely important. This is not just a one time communication but a continuous stream of discussions. Remember that especially in designing you are talking to another human being and not a genie that would get inside your mind and come up with exactly what you want. You have to explain and even give reasons as to what you require. Clarity in communication solves A LOT of things. If you are in the market with just an idea and not a details layout, tell the developer and ask him for advice. Remember, you know best for your business and clients, and your requirements are coming due to your vast experience. It wont be wise to assume that the other person would understand the core of your business in a 10 min call.

Once your communication has reached a point where both you and developer are comfortable with the requirements, its time to do more drilling into the requirements and pinning them down in a phase called B.A. (Business Analysis).

Business analysis: This sounds like a lot of paperwork, but this effort is required to help the client as well as the developer. To give you an example of what BA phase includes here is a a small example of how a simple REGISTRATION MODULE can be drilled down to further sub parts. Normally anyone would think, ah yeah… registration module.. should not take more than 2 hours, and this is where the problems start happening.

a. Registration form using 5-10 registration fields with validations (3 hours)
b. Include Facebook Login (1 hour)
c. Include twitter login (1 hour)
d. Successful Registration E-mailer (1 hour)
e. Forgot Password system (1 hour)
f. Forgot Password mailer (1 hour)
g. QA (Quality testing for module) 1 hour

As you can see what normally people assume that can be done easily was actually quite an effort. If this effort is not broken down into hours and shared to give total clarity, it would surely be a stepping stone to disaster in the project. This not only gives total clarity to the client on what they are supposed to get/ what they are paying for, but also saves the developer from doing extra work not being quoted for.

UNDERSTANDING THE PROJECT LIFE-CYCLE

Another important area that is important for a client to know and understand is the project life cycle. Though developers understand that the clients they are dealing with are not from the same IT background, but understanding or at-least trying to understand what is coming there way and how their job would be done is the responsibility of a client.

Some of them are:
1. Understanding the phases the project will be divided into
2. How many milestones would each phase carry
3. What deliverable would each milestone have
4. Knowing what can be changed when during the course of the project

For example:
Knowing that a design mock up is not the final product in itself. A lot of iterations would be done on it based on communication. There have been multiple times where clients do not understand the idea behind a design (which is normal) and reject it flat. Jokes apart we have had designs rejected due to color combinations, and rejected with 0 acceptance even on the structure. However, when the same structure is shown in a different color combination they fall in love with it.  Only if a client knows that this phase is only to show them the creative side and that the colors can be easily modified, would make things move much faster on the project.

EVERYTHING CAN’T BE PERFECT THE FIRST TIME.
We all want things done perfectly for us don’t we? That extra spacing is required to make it look just right. Well if you are on a tight deadline, and are a perfectionist, then you will have to set your preferences right.

In mid to large scale custom projects, as a client, you should ignore certain  minor aspects which are not interfering too much with the functionality or design aesthetics of the project. When developing a project your focus should be your end user. Think about it this way… Would you not register on Gmail if in one your browser the button is a tad to the left and not aligned correctly? So, would your users be so picky?
Being a perfectionist is not a problem if you are willing to take as much time as you want to complete the problem and not blame the developer for taking way too much time and going overboard in terms of time frame.
This is precisely the reason why there is a “BETA” sign on websites / portals when they are launched.

As a client you should segregate high priority and low priority elements. This way you would feel happy about the progress made on the project and would be in control of your deliverable.

With that said, your preferences should also be aligned to the sort of product you are taking to the market and what competition you have. For example, if you are a start-up and want to set up a website on a concept that has never been tried before, you are better off making compromises on your “Mr./Ms. Perfectionist” trait and worry more about getting to the market as early as possible. An entire showcase of the Isenberg catalog developed using Joomla platform with A LOT (understatement) of custom modules and modification. The entire project made in HTML5, and fully responsive to the last page. Consistency in design was important for all of  us for a website that contains more than  500 + pages. I don’t think anyone needs an introduction to what 3D graphics are specially if you have played games like Subway Surfers and Temple run. Making 3D models which are going to be used in mobiles are made keeping in mind the different devices the game would be played in.

What are these differences you might ask… and to sum up everything they are called “Polygons or Poly’s”. To describe polygons a bit more, and of course in the easiest possible way – they are nothing more than building blocks of any 3D model. A 3D model can either be made using high number of polys or low.

High Poly Models

1) Higher polys are used in models which have extreme attention to detail.

2) High Poly models are smooth and realistic.

3) High Poly models utilize more rendering power and need higher level graphics to present them. (Ever wondered why some 3D games are leggy on your computer/device, but works fine on your friends…. we’ll get to it in a minute)

Low Poly Models

1) Used where attention to detail is not required

2) Low poly models are not generally smooth

3) Low poly models work well in low graphic power PC’s or Devices

It is quote evident from the points above as to why Low poly models are used for mobile games. Simple reason – mobile devices have less graphical power as compared to a computer or more.. having a graphics card.

Are different modeling software’s used for high and low poly modeling?
NOPE, the software’s used are the same – but the only difference is during the creation part. For modeling, 3D Max and Maya are the industry favorites.

Low poly models don’t look great, i want to use high poly in my mobile games.
It’s like killing an ant with a box of TNT. There is absolutely NO USE. There is no point in creating something beautiful, which runs slow or does not run at all even in your iPad. Functionality over Design.

Name a few mobile games which use low poly models:
Subway Surfers, Temple run

What about animating a model. For example making it run…?
The animation of a model like running is a process called “Rigging”
Here is an example of a low poly model and the bone structure created for it for a game we are currently producing. A bone structure is given to the model and later animated.

What I consider to be a matte painting is to “create” something from ground up. As a designer, i personally love Matte painting, because it gives me a sense of making something that i actually love doing. Sure, making websites and graphic designs is all cool, but with all the restrictions clients tend to bound you in, sometimes puts a lot of pressure on your creative instincts. When all of this at the peak, then i tend to open up Photoshop on a lazy afternoon over the weekend, and make something that i feel like.

Of-course this is different from artist to artist. Some might like making a collage of vector elements, some painting, some sketching, but for me – it’s creating unreal stuff. The stuff that i don’t come across during my routine jobs.

Today i thought i would make a beginner level info to explain what generally goes into making a matte painting. This is for demo purposes only and simply using Photoshop . Moving deeply into matte painting you would come across stuff like fusion, and other software’s.

So moving on…. What are we creating today?

For a small scene – here were the keywords i thought of.

Indian temple, Rain, Elephants, Storm. (This came because of a documentary i was watching on south India, just before this post)

Time i gave myself to compile elements: 5 mins, To connect all elements: 10 mins.
To the total work done here is 15 mins.

This work is extremely basic and does not have any polishing or coloring done on it.

I personally got a feeling that this was a “take” on how Apple presents it’s new launches..

This article is based for IOS games only. To be honest we don’t have much experience launching mobile games in the Android Market. However, with our extensive experience in launching countless games for the Apple Market, here are a few insights that you probably don’t wanna miss out on. In a nutshell there are just about 2 things you need to keep in mind for the publishing phase of the game. I was thinking of writing 500+ words to give a good introduction about the IOS market and how it works, and maybe write some content for search engines  (yep, you gotta do all that these days in the age of penguins and pandas) but i decided against that. I can imagine the people coming on this page would probably have the basic know how on how things are done, so ill explain the knowledge as quickly as possible.

THE INITIAL BOOST FROM APPLE: BLAST OFF!!!!

Ever come across those websites or apps which showcase app information, discounted app prices, just updated? Well these are the websites or apps which are a part of Apples affiliate group. How much money they earn is a different chapter all together, but in this post we are discussing about how these websites and apps promote your game.

When your game is launched these websites pick up your app’s information from the Apple database and pop up on a lot many places. Not only for new games, but apparently they also showcase apps which have recently been updated. This explains why game publishers see a spike in downloads when they update their game. This system is a win win for everyone. I am not sure if Android market has this but for IOS, this is a morale booster for the indie publisher.

The issue is… that same day your app goes online, there are probably a thousand more there to give you competition. On an average you probably should easily see 1000+ downloads on the first day of launch, buy you can very well can see 5000+ on the same day if you do these two things right.

1) ICON, ICON, ICON, ICON, and yeah ICON

Imagine this: You are seeing a page full of 50 icons. You wanna download something interesting today. Maybe you wanna be the uber cool guy who discovers a really cool app and wants to boast in front of your friends. Scrolling through you glance upon an icon that has just come out of a Steven Spielberg movie. A great looking girl riding an even greater looking bike……. the tires are on fire, a gun in here hand and behind there is Optimus prime chasing her. It looks like the girl is just about to jump out of that little ICON. You get so freaked out looking at the icon, you press the download button.

BOINGGGGG!!….. that’s the first thing YOUR app needs to do.

Depending on what your subject is, this is one aspect you CAN NOT! miss out.
In all honesty… and this is a harsh truth….. It does not matter if you have the next temple run or angry birds inside that game. If your ICON sucks, you pretty much have nailed the coffin. For an indie developer having no money to advertise the games and absolutely no fan following, this is one weapon you wanna utilize the most.

Here is a personal Example:

We initially launched our first 3D game with the Icon below. I was personally proud of the game we created, and was expecting the world out of it.

The Icon, i personally thought was pretty decent. It went well with the game concept and had some decent art work. As per what i know today, this icon is average looking and will generate some interest but it’s not “top charts” material. When we launched this game we got 1500 + Initial boost from apple, and over a few days it died down. In all honesty it was pretty disappointing as i knew that the game had good potential.

When we had almost lost hope – the internet world was full of the ” GANGNAM STYLE ”
What the heck we thought… !! Our character looked a bit like the Gangnam Guy, why not re launch the game and make a Gangnam Parody out of it.

And so was born: The Gangnam Style FLY! Here is the icon we used as a parody to the Gangnam Style video.

The same game…..the same graphics. everything single thing the same…. but with one change…this time the initial boost on the first day got us 15,000+  downloads. Till date the Gangnam game has got over a million downloads.  BTW, we recently changed the icon again…

Hope you guys have got the idea..about how important icon is.

Moving on to the second most important thing.

THE 1st SHOWCASE SCREEN of the Game:

Well, it’s the second thing you see in the game after the icon. It’s basically a summary of the game in an image. Just like the icon, it’s gotta tell a story.

Here is a quick example of what i mean.

Searching the APP STORE for ZOMBIE game: this is what comes up in first two results.

Every one has played Zombie Highway. In fact this was one of the game which deserved by $4.99 for the plasma gun..
Coming back to the main screen, do you see how it generates interest of the user – as one sees a car in full speed, zombies trying to attack it and the guy shooting them. Well that there is the entire summary of the game. Now imagine the game game having a bogus screenshot of the in-game. Well, that wont be generating any interest, and no interest = no downloads.

In this second specimen, we come across ZOMBIE RUN. The most original running game made for the iphone. (pun intended)

The developer, made a game like Temple run. That’s cool because everyone want’s to follow the success formula. The ICON, if you look at it, basically has the same color combination as temple run… but still is different. The cleverly awesomeness of this developers mind does not end there. In the main screenshot, the angle is taken exactly as Temple run, and the words “AZTEC TEMPLE” (yeah, right) is mentioned on top. Even, In the subconscious mind of a chimp, it would know that this game is something like temple run… Let’s download it…. and right there…!!!! The developers motive is met and the game is downloaded.

I have to point out that these tactics can be called cheap – But in a pool of millions of apps – if being a little cheap can get you a lot of downloads.. then i think it’s all ok. I surely advise against copying things 100% – but being smart is absolutely fine.
