Is Your Web Site Marketing to the Right Consumer Group?
When looking around the web, most of us will notice some funky, flashy, cool web sites that have all sorts of colors and cute things going on in it. But the question is; does this kind of stuff really grab our consumers attention? After all, who is actually buying the product? Do you know who you are marketing to? And, do the people you market to have the money to spend on your product?
In order to create a functional, well designed web site one must know the online buying pattern of the consumer. In other words what the consumer trends are for your type of product, and this should influence how the website is designed. Many companies have realized that they need to target people that are over the age of 40, after all those are the people that have money to spend. It is well known that in the U.S. the Baby Boomer generation accounts for at least 20% of the population and the U.S is faced with the impact this generation has on its economy. It is know that the populations above 40 hold over 90% of the populations’ economy.
So the question we as marketing companies should be asking is: How does this generation spend its money? It has been found that Americans that are 45 and older spend money on housing, transportation and food. Other expenditures are financial products like insurance, health care, investments. The rest is split between entertainment, clothes and travel expenditures. This is the generation that is probably into buying electronic equipment, traveling abroad as well as traveling nationally. It is important to note that Americans that are over 50 are using the internet to shop as well. In fact they are the internets most essential consumer.
According to marketing studies over 50% of the population above the age of 50 have been online and 55% of these that were under the age of 55 had purchased online, and 45% of those over the age of 55 had done the same. This generation is not only spending for themselves, but for their families as well, including children and grandchildren.
So, if you are in the web design market, this means you need to consider this essential senior market when choosing a web designer. Up until now web design has been an area where young people abound, and frankly it looks it. Most websites are geared toward the younger generataion, but for a web design to be liked by the older generation, it has to take into account their likes and dislikes, and be a little less trendy and a little more sophisticated and tasteful.
What is important in this type of design is simplicity, good taste, and clarity in the web design itself. This type of design appeals to everyone, including the older generations who enjoy the simple and elegant things life has to offer. It is just a well known fact that "good taste" in web design sells.
